M(h)aol share new single ‘I Miss My Dog’ – see video at the bottom of this article! The video is a heartfelt tribute to the dogs we’ve loved and lost, and the ones still with us.

Based in Dublin, Belfast, and London, Constance Keane, Jamie Hyland, and Sean Nolan have built a reputation for thrilling live performances, fostering an atmosphere that encourages community and catharsis regardless of where they play.

On the song, Constance Keane shares, “’I Miss My Dog’ is a song about my dog Poppy, and the experience of losing a pet. She passed away in July last year, and I still sometimes wake up thinking she’s with us. I think losing a dog is something that people either understand or they don’t, and this is a song for those of us that do.”

1.Who are M(h)aol?

C: We are three people from Ireland who also make music.

2.For someone that is yet to discover you, how would you describe your music?

C: Angular and exciting.

J: A bit like Marmite. A little bit tangy and maybe you won’t like it but that’s fine. A great alternative to the meat based version.

3.What inspired you as an artist?

C: Usually things that happen to me or that I see around me.

4.What Is Your Pre-Show Routine?

C: Stretching and going to the toilet.

S: Group huddle, motivational speech

5.Where do you feel you fit into the music landscape?

C: I am not overly sure where we do. I think we’re still figuring that out to be honest.

6.What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?

C: I am not very into opera music.

S: I do love reggae and punk, but I really don’t get any Ska-punk from the last 30 years or so.

7.Is there a story behind the band’s name?

C: It’s the surname of a pirate queen from Ireland called Gráinne Mhaol. It also means bald or blunt in Irish, and I had shaved the head of our old singer before starting the band.

8.What would you say is your greatest strength as an Band /artist?

C: I think we’re pretty good friends and don’t get overly influenced by what other people are doing.

9. What are you listening to right now?

C: Turnstile

J: 40 greatest hits of Perry Como

S: The Ex

10. What music artists would you say have influenced your work?

J: Throbbing Gristle, Charles Mingus,

11.Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?

S: Lynne Ramsay, Lucretia Dalt, Kool Keith

12.worst performance?

C: Too many to name. We have played many shows in many different scenarios to varying degrees of success.

J: worst for us or for the crowd or for all musician-kind?

S: Possibly a showcase during Covid with no audience but that was filmed (and hopefully has not and will never see the light of day)

13.Biggest obstacle & how did you overcome it?

C: Still being a band. I think we’ve overcome it by wanting to be a band.

J: Finding a second bass amp. We still have yet to figure that out completely.

14.What is your creative process when making music? Do you work with others or is it just you?

J: for this album we just went into a room together and started making noise in the hopes that an album would come out of us. It’s just us. I record everything so even in the studio there is just us. We can’t even afford an assistant engineer for the recording studio.

15.This year, what can we expect?

C: We have our album Something Soft coming out on 16th May on Merge/TULLE. An Irish tour in May/June, some festivals over summer, then a UK tour in the September.

J: Us asking you for a second bass amp.
