Festival Season is here: Summer Series returns to Somerset House
It's officaly July and that means that the season for sunshine and outdoor summer festivals is here. And one of the events that is back in full force this year is the Summer Series at Somerset House. The concert series that takes places from July 5th - 15th, kicks off this week for a week long series of outdoor shows form a variety of artists.
Artist set to take the outdoor stage at Somerset House include Sigrid, Jorja Smith, Little Simz, Don Letts, The Roots, De La Soul and more.
The month will range from well established artist to the great emerging talent on the scene. In terms of the dates and performs to look out these are just a couple that are definitely worth catching.
The opening night of the Somerset House Summer Series which kicks off tomorrow sees Metronomy one of the greatest British bands of the last ten years - play a career-spanning set of leftfield pop. Seeing support from British rapper/spoken word artist Kojey Radical, who will also be featured in Somerset House's new photography exhibition The Influence Project.
This Satuday July 7th, filmmaker, DJ and broadcaster Don Letts presents Bass Forward- with host a night celebrating the influence that music of black origin has had on this country's culture in the 70th anniversary year of the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush. Don will be joined on the decks by Norman Jay MBE and Soul II Soul's Jazzie B, with very special live performances from the Godfather of Grime himself, Wiley (MBE).
Other exciting acts to look out for will include Oli Fox joining Norwegian singer/songwriter and winner of the BBC Sound of 2018 Sigrid on her only London festival date on Wednesday July 11th while the following night legendary artists The Roots will be supported by the multi-talented British artist and sometime Gorillaz collaborator Little Simz. Friday July 13th will see emerging artist Jorja Smith take the stage joined by London-based five piece Ezra Collective, a band who are effortlessly "pioneering the new wave of UK jazz".
In addition to the live music line up, Somerset House will also host The Influence Project a new photographic exhibition that explores the roots and influence of modern R&B, Funk, Soul, Afrobeat and Hip Hop. This forms part of the East Wing Edit, a summer of free exhibitions, talks, pop-ups, events and workshops, offering unique insight into Somerset House's season of music, film, independent print and contemporary circus performances, all taking place in Somerset House's East Wing.
