Q&A: Jen Gloeckner

Having just recently released her album, VINE, ASBO recently caught up with artist, Jen Gloeckner to speak on the process of creating the album, her musical influences and sound

ASBO: For people that may be not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?

Jen: I hope it’s my own sound, and somewhat unpredictable.  I like to boil things down to the most pure emotions that I can find. I would rather take the listener somewhere, rather than create
typical, chorus, verse songs.

ASBO: What inspired the sound of your new album, Vine?

Jen: To write a record, you need to be inspired constantly, so I look for it everywhere. Inspiration may come from a movie or story, or maybe even a smell or sound.

ASBO: How would you describe your creative process?

Jen: I write, record and produce all my records in my bedroom, which really opens things up. The best way to describe the process is that it is similar to writing in a journal. I keep adding and building until I am satisfied. I normally do not re-record the songs. The end result, usually has all the beginning elements still intact.

ASBO: When creating the album, what was one thing that you wanted to stand out for fans?

Jen: Most of all I hope they are taken on trip, like a 40 minute daydream. Things are so crazy in the world these days, that I hope it serves as a short escape from everything.

ASBO: Is there a particular sound and feel you wanted your album to capture?

Jen: It’s impossible for me to preconceive how a record will sound. In the end, I would not be happy if it wasn’t something that totally took me by surprise.

ASBO: Who are some of your musical influences?

Jen: Bob Dylan was an early influence, but these days I don't really listen to much music. I’m probably influenced more by movies, and life itself, these days.

ASBO: What about i you could only listen to one artist for the rest of your life?

Jen: Oh wow, it would be really hard to listen to anyone that long! I’m gonna cheat and say Baroque music.

ASBO: What sort of changes have you noticed since you released your last project?

Jen: Musically, things have not changed much, but the music business has. It is a whole new world from seven years ago. It probably changes a lot even year to year. You really gotta be able to adapt to the changes to survive.

ASBO: What have been some of your favorite songs on the record?

Jen: Each song has to touch me personally to make it on a record, but 'Colours; and 'The Last Thought', have something a little extra special to them.

ASBO: What's next for you?

Jen: I started writing a new record, so I hope to get that released maybe mid 2018. I would also like to squeeze in a few shows yet this year.
