Sanju Reminds Us We Can Overcome Anything!

Drugs, affairs, guns, gangs, and imprisonment – that’s usually a combination for a great fictional story. However, these things have plagued the life of actor Sanjay Dutt, and in the new Indian biopic Sanju, we find out just how much our favorite star had to endure.

Sanju is directed by the master filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani who is also synonymous for working with Sanjay Dutt in the beloved Munna Bhai films, where he also worked with Sanjay’s father, Sunil Dutt. So there was no one else who could have directed this biopic, and in typical Raju Hirani fashion, he found the humor in Sanjay Dutt’s story while maintaining the drama and seriousness of it as well.

The actor tasked with portraying Sanjay Dutt in his biopic was none other than Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir has similar features to the eighties/nineties version of the Bollywood legend; however, this film required him to master the young and old version of Dutt. Whether it was gaining muscle, walking like him, capturing his undeniable swagger – Ranbir morphed himself into Sanjay Dutt. So much so, that I forget that I was watching another actor, I thought I was watching a documentary about the Munna Bhai star.

If this film has accomplished anything, it’s making Dutt a bigger hero than he ever was before. Sanju would not have been possible had the actor not decided to open up about his life and share his bizarre and crazy story. Also, the fact he owned up to his highs and his incredible lows, makes him a far bigger person than any of us could ever dream of being. How many stars or everyday people would actually share their deepest, darkest secrets and show them to the entire world?

Not only is his bravery in opening up inspiring, but his story which has been told by Raju Hirani and Ranbir Kapoor is a story filled with life lessons for every man, woman, and teenager. He has made his fair share of mistakes, and this story helps us learn from those mistakes. His addiction to drugs was so bad he consumed almost every drug there was, and Sanju shows us just how badly this can affect a person’s life. Even the life of someone who has supposedly got it all.

While moments like Sanjay Dutt sleeping with his best friends girlfriend are turned into laugh out loud moments for the benefit of the film, it doesn’t change the fact that it still shows us that this is no way to treat a friend. Dutt’s lackadaisical attitude has resulted in a lot of funny stories, but it’s arguably hindered him more than helped in his professional and personal life.

But Sanju is not just about learning from his mistakes it’s also about learning how you can “win every battlefield.” Whether it was facing his links to the underworld and telling them he can longer meet them, battling his drug addiction, or mending fences with his father, Dutt heroically conquered every battle.  He even fought back against the “terrorist” label that was unfairly strapped on him by the media.

What Sanjay Dutt has had to face and overcome during his lifetime is quite frankly absurd, and many of us would consider ourselves fortunate to overcome one of these problems. And if any of you have forgotten the importance of family and friends, Dutt’s story will make sure you realize just how important they are to one’s life as well. While Ranbir will get plaudits for his performance as Dutt, the real Sanjay Dutt will receive even more praise for becoming an inspiration to millions around the world.
