Words by Rachel June

RinRin is an interesting genre-bending artist who combines the cutesy with the hardcore. Deathly metal screams flow out of her from the depths of the underworld, whilst her beloved ‘baby metal’ vibes are adorable yet outrageous. She loves the mix between the cute aesthetic with her “dirty heavy sound”. RinRin’s sound is influenced by iconic bands like Bring me the horizon, as well as being influenced by Japanese rock bands. She describes her music as, “If J rock was in English.” She loves mixing “heavy sounding instruments” with a “very unassuming voice for metal.” Not fitting into metal stereotypes, this juxtaposition is what makes RinRin unique.
Fans leave live shows amazed by her unexpected vocal range. She fondly remembers being on tour in Brisbane, where a guy “Got onto the stage and did a backflip”, and although she is a bag of nerves before the show, with the support of her friends and the adrenaline from hearing those first drums, 1, 2…she becomes full of energy, ready to go. Creatively, she says it’s “Pretty random” when she writes, she begins with a melody that appears in a dream or an image” and is always inspired by the life around her. She describes the way she writes as “Pretty arbitrary”, and opening up about her bipolar, she expresses that “Music helps me express myself in a healthy way,” whilst admitting, “I’m a bit of a potty mouth.”

She dreams to collaborate with childhood idol Avril Lavinge, having been mesmerised by her music growing up, and her current spotify comprises HeadWreck and PaleDusk, “loving their merge of trap beats with heavier stuff.” For aspiring artists, she tells them “Don’t give a fuck about what people think. I make something, I put it out there, and anyone who doesn’t like it – I don’t care. Enjoy what you do”
This year, her album will come out – with a tour on the horizon. She shout outs Chric Lalic, drummer of Wind Waker and RinRin’s producer, giving thanks to him for his support in her recent growth. Stay tuned to see her thrive, and follow her journey on Instagram.
