ASBO Magazine spoke to the insanely talented, well-travelled and passionate trumpeter/composer Brandon Woody, who spoke to us about his latest release “Real Love, Pt. 1”, available here, as part of ‘For The Love Of It All’ out now – released May 9th 2025. The Album features six original compositions by Brandon’s band Upendo, comprising Troy Long, Quincy Phillips, and Michael Saunders, alongside special guests Imani Grace and Vittorio Stropoli.
Warm jazz skips around beautifully orchestrated sounds that take you on a journey. The ebbs and flows of life are felt within his music. It sweeps past you as if you’ve just missed something, and then you grab it – and stay along for the ride. Creating this track was like “reaching for something”, Brandon recalled. His smooth and soulful trumpet, scattered yet intricate piano, drums that play and smash with comfort and ease, and delightful vocals comprise the sound. It’s everything that jazz is supposed to be, and more.

Having lived in New York whilst writing this track, amongst the madness that the city brings, Brandon thanks the music that “kept me on a straight path”. Real Love p.1 is evolving, and still evolving – hence the name p.1 – there will be more. Brandon has loved music since the age of 7, a natural-born talent. He started composing from a young age and dabbled with music production since college. He simply states, “Music has changed my life”. Acknowledging the ups and downs that life brings, he is thankful for all of them – crucial to his growth as an artist, “I have highlights of every single part of my career”, he smiles. He mentions having had no regrets, as everything has led to where he’s at now. Life experiences guide him. To future artists, he advises that “you are who you are around,” Giving special thanks to those who have helped shape him, like those with whom he worked on this track.
When I asked Brandon what drives his passions, he humbly admitted that having an impact on others drives him the most. “I have had people call me crazy for being a musician. It’s a blind faith you have to have. I’ve invested it all into what I love, and I am so blessed beyond measure”. He notes a special time when a student from the Baltimore School of the Arts recognised his song and used it in a showcase – a full circle moment for the BSA alumni. Brandon creates from the heart, and seeing the impact he has on people has been an inspiring experience. He further comments, “live in the present, take it day by day and week by week. Surround yourself with good people who you can communicate with and trust”.
Experience and explore more of Brandon’s music by following his journey, and stay tuned for more of his epic creations.
