2025 is an exciting year for indie aficionados as girlpuppy drops her third single ‘I Just Do’ and announces her second album, Sweetness, set for release on 28/03/2025 through Captured Tracks.
A blend of tender ballads and fiery alternative pop-rock tracks, this consolidated edition to girlpuppy’s discography is sure to provide a dynamic listening experience to both long-time and new fans.
After her debut release, When I’m Alone (2022) under Royal Mountain Records, captivated the hearts of global listeners, girlpuppy has had a busy three years of touring, recording, and personal transformation, culminating in Sweetness.
girlpuppy, Becca Harvey, sat down with ASBO to discuss this sugar-coated single and album.
‘I Just Do’ is a perfect example of the emotional spectrum showcased in Sweetness. There is a new hope within Becca as she allows herself to fall in love again. A blend of acoustic driven verses and choruses bursting with electric guitar shows the excitement, delicacy, and ferocity of opening up to someone new and allowing them into your world.

New blooming intimacy in the verses “we could stay in this hotel room and pretend there’s nowhere else to go” is contrasted by the chorus hook, “I think I’m a masochist. I know you could hurt me.” It seems girlpuppy is not just falling in love again, but learning to fall in love with love. She has healed, and transcribes this complexity in both lyrics and instrumentals.
Despite the lyrics, the accompanying music video adds a dark humour to this healing process. With gorgeous 70s inspired styling, visuals and lighting capturing the vintage softness of ‘Windows’ visuals, girlpuppy, is now a vampire, lurking at a houseparty. She is the outsider, observing the other partygoers. Finding another “WANTED” outsider, rejected by his partner, she turns him into a vampire. They will heal together in the darkness.
When speaking with Becca, our conversation fell onto life in London, and London’s vibrant goth scene. I was surprised when she was very keen to visit London’s goth parties. girlpuppy can do spooky and would stand out on the scene.
“I’ll be at the sweet goth rave. And I’ll be dressed.”
Imaging Sweetness as an emotional landscape, its trifecta of singles, ‘Champ’, ‘Windows’, and ‘I Just Do’ showcase different biomes.
‘I Just Do’ is the April shower – and you can read more about the autumnal forest of ‘Windows’ HERE, with all its velvet and lace.
‘Champ’ is the volcanic place, tapping into a ferocity unlike anything explored on When I’m Alone. There is a soft magma present in the guitar. Becca is ready for battle, fired up to fight the emotions of a significant breakup. Alex Ferra’s production is highlighted best here. His ability to draw out nuanced tones in distorted guitar is masterful, and his contributions elevate Sweetness greatly:
“Working with him was a dream come true. He’s so good at really unique and beautiful and gritty guitar tones. It’s all over the record. The grittiness of ‘Champ’ is definitely not the only one like that.”

On more vulnerable When I’m Alone tracks, there is a sense of self-blame in her lyrics. ‘Champ’ flips this narrative: “You toss me away”, “You pushed me aside”, “You have too much pride”. Becca is approaching her emotions to hold both sides accountable, empowering listeners experiencing the same feelings to follow suit:
“I definitely came into the album a little bit angrier. I’m pointing the finger back at the rightful person that was to blame instead of taking everything on myself and feeling guilty. This is what’s wrong with me, but this is what’s also wrong with this thing or this person. A lot of self reflection happened to realise things absolutely.”
Becca describes her lyric writing process as like writing a journal, a window into intimate and specific experiences. Accompanied by the folk and country elements of When I’m Alone, it’s like going on a road trip with her, getting to know her as you drive on a country road.
Recording the album in a mountain house in Thornhill, Tennessee, over a month-long period with friends and collaborators from her home state of Atlanta, the influence of her space and environment transformed the production and life-force of the album.
After three years of touring across America, Canada, Europe and the UK, and performing her songs live, influences themes on Sweetness, creating a slightly less personal, yet still relatable listening experience. Becca wants to keep some emotional cards close to her chest:
“I’m 25 now. I’d like to keep a little bit more of mystery. As more people discover my music, there’s some things that I like to keep personal, which is something I had to learn.”

Despite a slightly more reserved and private album, Sweetness still maintains the sense of wholesome community. Becca has collected a range of musicians to play her instrumentals on the Sweetness tracks, including Madden Klass, Matt Maltese’s drummer, Tommy Davidson, guitarist of Beach Fossils, and Dimitri Giannopoulos from Horse Jumper of Love providing backing vocals.
With 2025 set to be a big year for girlpuppy, Sweetness will surely inspire up and coming indie artists to be vulnerable, to write, record, and release their own music:
“The best piece of advice I could give to people is, as simple as it sounds, to be kind. I really value making friendships and making connections, and I think that that’s a huge part of it, and I think that’s a huge part of being successful. It’s really huge to just be nice and keep a good reputation and make friends and make connections with people.”
The ASBO team is excited for more girlpuppy updates and sweet treats as 28/03/2025 draws near.
